Google’s AI-powered notes app is now called Notebook LM |
Google's note-taking tool, previously known as Project Tailwind, has been rebranded as NotebookLM. It is being launched to a small group of users in the US. NotebookLM is designed to provide users with their own personal AI assistant trained on their data and notes. The tool initially focuses on Google Docs, allowing users to select multiple documents and use NotebookLM to ask questions and create new content.
Google suggests various use cases for NotebookLM, such as automatically summarizing documents or converting video outlines into scripts. The tool is particularly geared towards students, enabling them to obtain summaries of class notes or information on specific topics like the Peloponnesian War.
To improve response accuracy and mitigate misinformation, NotebookLM limits the underlying model to user-provided information. It also includes citations for fact-checking. However, Google acknowledges that the model may still produce incorrect information and emphasizes that the quality of responses depends on the information users provide.
Google assures users that the NotebookLM model only accesses the documents they choose to upload and that their data is not available to others or used for training new AI models. However, the tradeoff between privacy and convenience remains a concern, especially with sensitive information.
NotebookLM is currently in its early stages and accessible via a waitlist in Google Labs. As with the Search Generative Experience, which reshaped Google Search, NotebookLM could potentially shape the future of Google Drive.
